Not only has culture and football put Ghana as a nation on the international map. For some time now, a lot of Ghanaian music artists have marketed themselves well and staged top class performances. Such artists include Reggie Rockstone, Sarkodie, Ayigbe Edem, Miss G, and Tinny at the current BET Cypher. Others include Samini, Okyeame Kwame and a lot more. One of these Ghanaian born artistes who cannot be left out is Ghanaian born UK based Konvict Record Label artist Derek Safo popularly known in the music world as Sway D Cypher. Although he has lived a greater part of his young life in London, Sway is one Ghanaian who has always lifted the Flag of Ghana so high in most of his performances. His reputation rose from underground to mainstream after coming into the public eye by winning a MOBO award in September 2005 for Best Hip Hop Act, defeating heavyweight hip hop artists 50 Cent and The Game to collect the award. He was also nominated for the second year running in the Best Hip Hop category and Best UK Male for the MOBO awards held at the end of September 2006] and in September 2008 for Best UK Male.
In an exclusive interview on Focus FM 94.3 MHz with NY DJ on the Banging Hip hop show last Saturday October 22nd 2010, Sway disclosed his intension to sign one of Ghana’s upcoming rap artiste D Cryme. This was a response to a question as to what he does apart from doing music. He disclosed he runs his own record label known as Dcypha Productions and looks forward to signing artistes from Ghana. He said “Yeah I have my own record label which I run, DE cypher Productions. We have six artistes now. I’m looking at signing an artist in Ghana. A guy called D Crime”
D Crime is a Tema based rap artist with hit songs such as “Kill me”, “Mene Wo a” and has featured for so many artistes such as Sarkodie, D Black and so on.
Sway is currently out with a new mixtape called the Delivery 2 which is a follow up to the Delivery 1 and a prelude to his upcoming album which he exclusively said will be released in March 2011 called “The Deliverance”. He explained the reason behind the album title as a result of the troubles he’s gone through and his deliverance. Sway is already enjoying massive airplay with his single with Gyedu Blay Ambulley, “Shepherd’s Pie” and “Pop a Bottle” with Donaeo.
Good luck to Sway and a better future to D Crime. “You don’t need to be told y’all”.
