The Republic hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is gearing up to welcome thousands of hall week celebrants from across the length and breadth of the country to celebrate what is usually known as the “Swag” hall week celebrations in KNUST and Ghana.
This year’s celebrations promise to be a unique one as the hall’s week celebrations coincide with the 4th Mini Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) games and the 2011 Intellecto, an annual three-day drama and choreography, all to be hosted by the university.
Republic hall, over the years, has been noted for organizing prodigious hall week and as the hall turns 50, residents would not take it lightly on anyone whose actions or inactions will erode their pride.
A visit to the hall reveals that all is set for the celebrations. Large Public Address system positioned at the center of the hall blaring and sending the message to all nukes and cronies announcing the celebrations.
The president of the hall, Mr. George Agyemang, says this year’s week celebrations will see the unveiling of the official 50th anniversary monument on Wednesday after the official Launch.
Mr. Agyemang also disclosed that the celebrations will be graced by high ranking dignitaries including the former Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Kwasi Kwafo Adarkwa, who is an alumnus of the hall.
The three aside basket ball, which starts on Thursday and climaxed on Saturday March 5, will not be missing in the programme outline. Checks reveals that the teams from KNUST, University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast, Central University, Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) among others are lacing their boots to battle it out at the hall’s basket ball court as the game enters its thirteenth year since its inception.
Last year’s basketball winners, Hurricane and slam dunk winner, XB will have a heavy task to defend their crown as they will face stiff competition from Ghana’s finest basketball players. Hurricane basketball team, last year, silenced Wengeze with 21-20 in the final match to annex the crown.
Residents of the hall (Mongols) will start the celebrations with a Health walk and clean up exercise in a procession on the principal streets of the university, halls and hostels amid brass band music.
Among other programmes marking the 50th week celebrations included five-aside football competition; Haparzo, a crusade to thank God, back to school and “kolo” night.
The seven-day celebrations will be climaxed with a Funcity featuring Ghana’s finest artistes on Saturday, March 5, 2011. Artistes on the bill who are expected to take the students through a hilarious performance include Cabun, Yaw Siki, Joe Frazier, Macafe, Atumpan among others.
Last year during the Funcity, some celebrants hanged on roof top to catch a glimpse at 4×4, Mimi and some “underground” rappers, while others took unprofessional shots from different angles.
