President of the Amputee Football Federation of Africa (AFFA) and Ghana Football Federation (GAFF), Mr. Francis Adjetey Sowah has appealed to government and society to improve the level of inclusion of the disabled in sports as well as national development.
He was speaking at a 4-day 2nd National Disability Conference organized by the Center for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on the theme: “Breaking Barriers for the Inclusion of Person;s with Disability in National Development”.
He says a nation like Ghana can’t do away with sports and recreation as this has won the nation several laurels especially the disabled sports and announced that Ghana took the 6th position in the Amputee World Cup in Argentina.
However, he resented how public recreational facilities are not disable friendly and sited the Baba Yara Stadium as the only facility friendly to the disable.
Some disable sports barriers he outlined are:
– Lack of political will to attend to the things of the disabled
– Low self esteem by the society towards the disabled.
He called on all to be proactive and action-oriented towards things of the disable.
